Training FAQ2018-08-15T19:54:38-04:00
What classes do you offer?2018-08-07T23:42:08-04:00

Pawsitive Canine Connection offers the most flexible group training classes available known as “Levels Training.” Levels obedience training is a group program offering unlimited training sessions during the period you are enrolled. Our group dog training classes are located in West Montrose and are a fun and sociable way to learn basic obedience with other dogs and their people. Group training offers an excellent, structured situation to socialize dogs in a controlled manner. Our classes are not like most, we believe there is a difference between having an obedient dog and a well behaved dog, we teach you to have both.

What is Levels Training?2018-08-07T23:44:15-04:00

Levels Training is a member’s only training program.
Families and their dogs can join one of four types of level’s memberships: Bronze (2-months), Silver (4-months) or Gold (6-months), Platinum (12-months).

During your period of enrollment, you can attend as much or as little training as you like. The levels program consists of five (including puppy) skill levels. Each level introduces new skills to your dog while continuing to practice previous skills with more and more distractions. Although each level has specific skill requirements which must be met prior to moving on to the next level, you and your dog progress through the levels at your own pace. Move through all 4-5 levels or choose to stay at a lower level. The choice is yours! “It’s a new twist on dog training and allows busy owners the flexibility they need to really teach their dog.”

Do you offer Private Sessions?2018-08-07T23:45:12-04:00

Yes! Private training sessions are designed for those who require additional assistance and still want to be involved in all of the training. We will meet you once per week for an hour to assist you with problem behaviors and teach you how to train your canine to act appropriately. We leave you with a set of skills and exercises that you work on during the week. With only 20-30 minutes per day of ‘homework’, you will see success in a short matter of weeks.

Do you offer guarantees?2018-08-07T23:46:31-04:00

I guarantee that I will give you the knowledge and skills you need to have a well behaved dog. It is the commitment and cooperation of the owner, household, environment and the health of the dog that I have no control over and therefore cannot ethically give a guarantee.

Do you require proof of vaccination?2018-08-07T23:50:41-04:00

We believe in a natural approach to raising our dogs by naturally feeding a fresh, whole diet including lots of meat and bones. We avoid over vaccination but instead we titer test, only use drugs if absolutely necessary, using natural worm medications and topical flea and tick products, it is up to you the owner if you feel comfortable bringing your dog to class.

We require proof of vaccination or titer test for all dogs.

Our number one priority is the safety and comfort of your cherished family member as well as the puppies we raise. Unfortunately due to the increase of diseases from dogs being imported to Canada from other countries, we are now requiring the imported dogs to be tested for brucellosis before coming to our facility.

What tools do you allow in class?2018-08-07T23:50:31-04:00

When it comes to tools there is no tool we won’t use when they are the best choice for the dog and the owner, we will teach you how to use use food, slip leads, prongs, ecollars, martingales and halti’s. We won’t use flat collars but will use harnesses for recall training but the harness must be designed for the dogs to pull comfortably.

Do you use prong collars?2018-08-08T00:06:51-04:00

Yes. All collars are about “volume.” Choosing the right tool for each dog means effectively speaking at a volume your dog can hear, through the varying degrees of distractions your dog experiences every day. A prong collar allows a handler to offer directional pressure (go this way, move like this…), feedback (don’t do that), and general information to their dog (positive also!) with more gentle pressure, and most importantly the handler can release that pressure quickly unlike with harnesses or flat collars when a dog is straining. We used just about every tool in the dog training market and have found prong collars to be one of the most humane training tools out there.

But wait – I know, it looks like a medieval torture device. A prong collar is designed to distribute pressure evenly around the dog’s neck, there is not one constant pressure point to harm your dog’s windpipe or dig into the skin. With a prong collar we can also effectively eliminate tension and regain a dog’s focus much more easily and clearly when a dog is in a heightened state.

Do you offer refunds?2018-08-08T00:08:01-04:00

If you’re already thinking about refunds, then we might not be the best match for each other. It’s super important to us at Pawsitive Canine Connection that you feel we are the right fit before working with us which is why we offer Free Evaluations before committing to training.

Day Training deposits are non-refundable, they provide a good faith payment for the significant amount of time reserved in our calendar for your dog. If you reschedule your Day Training within 60 days, your deposit will be credited toward the new date. Paid deposits for initial one-on-one sessions are non-refundable, but can be held as credit if rescheduling your session(s) within 30 days. It is of the utmost importance to us that you get what you need from training your dog with us.

Your registration holds a space in class for you.  Refunds are granted (less $100) for cancellation notice received no later than 7 days prior to class start date. Anything more than 7 days we do not offer refunds.

What kind of behaviours do you work with?2018-08-08T00:09:41-04:00

Through both our one-on-one dog training sessions, and our Day Training services and group classes, we tackle many different dog behavioural issues. The following are among the most common behaviors we address, but do not represent the full scope of training we provide:

  • Puppy Behaviours
  • Leash Reactivity
  • Pulling on Leash
  • Separation Anxiety
  • Dog Aggression*
  • Human Aggression*
  • Fear and Anxiety
  • Recall
  • Jumping
  • Barking
  • Excessive Mouthing
  • Basic Obedience
  • Off- Leash

*These two are often resulted from fear and anxiety. We prefer to work with these dogs in Private sessions.

Will my puppy get to play with others?2018-08-08T00:10:43-04:00

No! We teach your puppy to ignore other dogs and distractions and focus on you. We practice proper socialization which means that your puppy will be exposed to many other dogs and people without anything bad happening to them.  Many adults dogs have behavioural issues because as puppies they were in groups with no proper guidance.  In actuality, puppies in this type of environment are usually bullied and are  being overly aroused and learning all kinds of negative behaviours especially when owners are not taught to properly advocate for their puppy when they are uncomfortable. We will teach you how to do socialization right!
