Who doesn’t want a dog that’s reliable off leash? From hiking in the woods to running in a park to simply hanging around the house, it would be hard to find someone who isn’t interested in having a dog who listens to them no matter what the circumstances. Our E-Collar Training class takes the basic obedience commands your dog already knows and overlays the use of an electronic collar (E-Collar) to obtain the reliability and off leash freedom you desire for your dog. If you're the type of person who wants more than simply loose leash walking. You want a dog who will come when called, off-leash, despite distractions and show good manners in simulated public environments. Or have a dog with mild separation issues, pulling and reactivity/aggression on leash, rude greetings and bad behaviour around guests, bad door manners, barking, counter surfing, door dashing, problematic chewing and digging. This is for you.

PACK WALK

10686750_755767501151476_977728578461162451_n

Walking with a pack of dogs is an entirely different experience for your dog versus walking alone.    There is a shift in energy that you can feel and see in the dog’s behavior and attitude.  We truly believe that walking together meets the innate need that dogs have to belong to and to roam together as a pack. Pack-walking allows a dog to experience that sense of belonging with other dogs.  The walks are also a great opportunity for a dog to practice their socialization skills such as meeting and greeting other dogs and people, behaving well on leash, and experiencing a variety of locations, environments, and situations. Pack-walks are an especially good place to start for dogs who are on the shy, timid, or anxious side as it gives them a chance to meet other dogs whom they may be able to play with off-leash someday. For you, a pack walk is not only a good chance to get some fresh air and exercise, spend some time with your dog, and work on your dog’s socialization, but it is also a good for socializing yourself.  It is so nice to be able to connect with other dog-lovers who love nothing more than talking about all things dog.

Walks are typically an hour long or longer and the locations will not always be the same.
All dogs welcome, those with lunging or reactive issues please bring a muzzle.
We have a few guidelines:
1.All dogs must be on either a prong collar, a martingale collar, a slip lead or Head Harness (Halti or Gentle Leader). (If you use a harness, you may attend, but we will provide you with a slip lead in order to teach you some new dog handling skills.)
2. Leashes may not be long longer than 6 feet. Flexi-leads will not be permitted.
3. We request that dogs be walked at a heel. If you struggle with proper walking, we will be there to help you accomplish this goal.
4.We also request that when out walking in the pack, you keep to the right of the sidewalk. We try to provide ample room for other pedestrians to pass by.
5.You are responsible for your dog and your dogs actions.
This walk will be instructional for those needing some guidance in honing their leadership skills. If you are really struggling, please let us know that you will need a little extra attention.

Walks are canceled due to severe weather, so make sure to check before you head out. All events will be posted on our Facebook page so make sure to like us to be able to attend.

OFF LEASH SOCIALS

Enclosed dog parks have become popular recently because they are seen as the solution for preventing dog-to-dog aggression. However, if not properly managed, a young dog may end up learning bad habits from the other dogs at the park instead. They may even get involved in skirmishes or fights. Enclosed dog parks have many dogs together in a relatively small amount of space. There is little to no control in terms of a dog’s age, energy level, and temperament or some owners don’t care about how their dog acts.

Dogs are often set up for failure in dog parks and they are often put in a position to compete with other dogs. Many times dogs are often rewarded for bad behaviour and corrected for good behaviour. As a result, dog parks can be chaotic and unpredictable.

Our classes are facilitated by a trainer that will help you and your dog establish good doggie manners and safe play. You can also use this time to get advice on your issues. Our classes are for all ages which is a perfect opportunity for your dog to learn to play and interact with other dogs and people in a safe, supervised environment.  We help your dog associate other dogs with positive experiences and teaches him to stay in control even when he is excited.

A dog's sense of smell is about thousand times more sensitive than that of humans. This is how dogs gather information about their surroundings all the time. Every dog possesses this amazing scenting ability and they love performing tasks where they can use this skill. This FUN sport, teaches the dog to use his/her nose to find a specific scent or odour on cue, and then tell you that they have found it. It's a great class for your dog to have fun, build confidence, and burn lots of mental and physical energy and to find out just how good your dog's nose is. Simply put, it's about having "FUN" teaching your dog to find one or more specific scents in a reliable manner and alerting their handler that they've found it. These exercises burn off mental and physical energy, and reinforce the bond between dog and owner. Because every dog will be working individually in class, this program is suited also for reactive dogs. Sport scent detection Learning outcomes
  • Build dogs' motivation to look for the target scent.
  • Build dogs' commitment to stay at the target scent.
  • Train dogs to report the finding by a report behavior.
  • Scent discrimination to find the scent among distractions.
  • Search for the scent in different environments.
  • Builds a bond between dog and owner as the owner is engaging the dog in something they already love doing.

Level 1
Container
It’s about having fun doing something that already comes natural to your dog without the pressure of “performing”. This Scent Detection Class level focuses on developing your dog’s natural scenting ability through “the hunt” and developing the dog owner’s ability to read the signals of their dog.
This is important because at some point the instructor will hide the scent without your knowledge and your job it to announce, “the find!”
We almost always start off with treats or toys teaching you how to encourage and develop your dog’s natural scenting abilities by using their desire to hunt and their love of toys, food and exercise.
In the Introduction to Scenting classes we’ll lay our foundation teaching your dog to use its nose to find a specific scent or odour on cue, and then tell you that they have found it.
We are going to vary the difficulty as well. Of course the searches will be easy at first but they will soon change to more challenging flop locations, hidden under a chair or a carpet, the elevation may change and the scent may even be sitting on a chair. You never know where it will turn up.

Level 2
Interior
In this level we introduce the real scent (usually wintergreen, birch, pine or thyme) along with the odour your dog has been hunting up to this point and as the weeks progress we gradually wean the dog away from the treats until the dog is hunting for the scent alone.
Once found we shower the dog with whatever most catches its fancy, treats or a tug of war or some hugs. We’re also going to start moving towards a passive alert which means the dog won’t make physical contact with the scent but will notify its owner by sitting and/or barking and pointing with its nose or paw.
By the end of this level the dog owners are going to be challenged a little themselves as they will often be unaware of where the scent is hidden and become responsible for saying, “Alert!” to notify me the search has concluded.

Level 3
Exterior
More of the same in the third level but far more challenges in difficulties of the hides and the distractions provided by different environment. We will also begin adding a second unique scent to your dog’s repertoire.

Recommendations for class
  • Highly Recommended – If your dog is currently a grazer as opposed to a gulper and is healthy begin transitioning to one or two 5 minute meals a day instead. It takes some dogs 3 or 4 days. Not only is this way of feeding healthier it will make Scent Detection Dog training easier, as you won’t feed your dog it’s evening ration until after class. Start this now.
  • Need to bring treats – a lot of them – a big bag of whatever your dog’s favourite is and a back up if you’re unsure. ( This is the only class I use treats for)
  • Need – Just in case, bring a few of your dog’s favourite squeaky and/or tug toys and/or balls he or she associated with retrieval.
  • Need a 6′ leash.
  • Need a water bowl and some water
  • If your dog normally wears a training collar of any sort that is fine, when working with your dog however any pressure can take your dog off the scent and stop the dog from succeeding. Trials only allow flat collars or harness,it would be best to train with these tools.
This working dog sport offers an opportunity for dog owners to train their dog and compete with each other for recognition of both the handler's ability to train and the dog's ability to perform as required in three phases: tracking, obedience, and protection, which are used to test a variety of skills, genetic traits, and overall versatility of a dog.   It is a sport enjoyed by persons of varied professions, who join together in a camaraderie born of their common interest in working with their dogs. Persons of all ages and conditions of life even those with significant disabilities enjoy Schutzhund as a sport. Often, it is a family sport.
